BackRoom Boston & The Boston Festival of New Jewish Music Presents: Beth Bahia Cohen

Beth explores the violin in Syrian Jewish & Russian Jewish cultures, she was inspired at a young age by the sounds she heard at family gatherings. She has been playing traditional Greek music on the violin & several types of lyras for many years, learning from & performing with violin & lyra players from Andros, Sifnos, Kythnos, Crete, Epiros, Macedonia, & elsewhere. She has performed with New York dance groups GAFS & Akrites, as well as throughout the U.S. & Canada, in concerts, at Greek dance symposiums (FDF, HDF, etc), & more.

Beth is a founding member of Ziyiá, an ensemble performing Greek music from all regions that was started at EEFC’s Mendocino Balkan Music & Dance Workshop, & has also performed with Vasilis Kostas, Christos Zotos, Petroloukas Halkias, Yiorgos Katsaros, & many other musicians. She also is a member of Pontic Firebird, a band formed in 2010 at the EEFC camps. Beth has taught Greek Violin, Greek Ensemble, & Transcarpathian Ensemble at EEFC Mendocino & East Coast camps for many years, as well as for the recent EEFC online classes. She also performs & teaches klezmer, Hungarian, Romanian, & Turkish music on the violin & other bowed instruments.
