DESCRIPTION:In Honor of Yom Hashoah\, join us for a Powerful & Inspiring Sunday Afternoon of Music of Remembrance A Double Bill to Close out West End Lyric’s Season 23-24! \nThis Double Bill conveys the vastness of the Holocaust’s scope through emotionally rich portraits of those caught in its grasp \n“For a Look or Touch” from Out of Darkness by Jake Heggie\, with libretto by Gene Scheer. \nOut of Darkness is based on the writings and memories of two Holocaust survivors. SUMMARY:Shterna and the Lost Voice\, a new Yiddish folktale
DESCRIPTION:In-Person & Zoom: \nBackRoom Boston & The Boston Festival of New Jewish Music Presents: Shterna and the Lost Voice\, a new Yiddish folktale \nJoin us! – for Shterna and the Lost Voice: a musical crankie storytelling adventure! This new folktale by A. C. Weaver is inspired by mythical stories of Elyahu Hanovi and traditional Yiddish folklore. Shterna and the Lost Voice follows a young woman’s quest from the realms of the dead to the celestial gardens of the immortal – all to restore her friend’s lost voice. Shterna’s epic adventure is accompanied by live original klezmer music while the narrative unfolds through a papercut crankie. This dynamic performance is geared towards audiences of all ages! \nShterna and the Lost Voice is presented by The Magid Ensemble (magid\, meaning “storyteller” in Yiddish) –  a new collaboration featuring award-winning klezmer musicians and composers Mattias Kaufmann\, Raffi Boden\, and Rachel Leader\, Yiddishist storyteller A. C. Weaver\, and visual artist Kiah Raymond. The Magid Ensemble explores the interplay of sound\, story\, light\, and shadow to create expressive and immersive storytelling landscapes. \nWhat is a crankie?  \nA crankie is a long scroll wound onto two spools that illustrates a story as it unwinds. Kiah Raymond’s original crankie incorporates shadow puppetry inspired by Jewish papercut art. \nReception with light bites on open top shelf bar follows the Concert! \nGet Tickets\n

SUMMARY:WEL & BackRoom Boston Presents: Women of Tin-Pan-Alley
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a jazzy evening celebrating female artists! \nFeaturing: Akela Franklin | Hannah Shanefield | Larisa Bainton | Jessica Bloch | Julia Pottinger \nAbout this Performance: \nTin-Pan-Alley was a collection of music publishers and songwriters in the Flower District of Manhattan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This small but mighty collective greatly increased the exchange of musical ideas\, granted wider access to popular & secular music to the everyday person\, and shepherded the careers of many cultural icons within America’s music and entertainment industry. \nSome of the best known names to emerge from Tin Pan Alley include men like George & Ira Gershwin\, Jerome Kern\, Irving Berlin\, Scott Joplin\, Rodgers & Hammerstein\, Fats Waller\, Cole Porter\, etc — however\, women also accounted for much of the venture’s success. Sadly\, but unsurprisingly\, their contributions largely tend to go unnoticed and unacknowledged in our mainstream narrative of the time. \nIn the spirit of lifting up historically silenced and forgotten voices\, our Women of Tin Pan Alley cabaret features works for voice and piano that showcase the songwriting talents of Kay Swift\, Dorothy Fields\, Ann Ronell\, Dana Seusse\, and Bernice Petkere! \nReception follows the Concert. \nPresented by West End Lyric at BackRoom Boston \nProduced by Bloch Performing Arts Inc. \nGet Tickets
